General impression:
(Poor) Lovely and misunderstood Roberto Benigni… He deserves so much better than comments regarding his underwear “antics”. He paints such beautiful images of love – pure, unconditional, universal love -, yet some critics are only able to get offended, not seeing the wood for the trees. Benigni may touch delicate subjects, but that only serves his profound message. This movie has a wonderful one: the love of your life is worth nothing less than getting into a war zone, if that would save her, even if there’s no hope for gratefulness, or anything to gain. The main character is a poet, not unlike Benigni. He may not look hunky, but that doesn’t prevent the man from being a romantic… or someone who truly loves. It’s obvious from the beginning that story realism is neither the highest point of this movie nor its objective. And that makes it a treat 🙂

Highlights:
The authenticity that transcends the screen. Benigni and his wife, Nicoletta Braschi, in a story about love – again. It’s not showing off, but putting talent and feeling to work for a better world.

Downside:
It can be easily misunderstood.
